Big Cyc is a Polish rock band with strong punk and satirical cabaret influences, founded in March 1988 and rooted in Łódź as well as the Ostrow Wielkopolski and Gdańsk music circles. The project grew out of bassist and vocalist Jacek “Dżej Dżej” Jędrzejak’s line up with guitarist Roman “Piękny Roman” Lechowicz and drummer Jarosław “Dżery” Lis, and took on its definitive shape when lyricist and frontman Krzysztof Skiba joined the group. From the outset, Big Cyc combined raw punk rock energy with outspoken socio political commentary and humour, creating what some describe as a specific form of “cabaret rock” in which jokes serve as tools of social critique. Big Cyc was formed in March 1988 in Ostrów Wielkopolski as a trio of Dżej Dżej, Dżery and Piękny Roman, with Skiba initially joining as a lyricist, MC and on stage provocateur before becoming the main frontman.
The band’s name was deliberately provocative and closely linked to the late communist context in Poland, fitting the punk tradition of using humour and shock value to comment on politics.
Big Cyc’s output is often described as “cabaret rock”, combining punk energy with satire and performance art elements, which makes their shows resemble theatrical spectacles rather than straightforward rock gigs.
Depending on the source, the band’s discography lists up to 19 studio albums, making Big Cyc one of the most prolific Polish rock groups in terms of full length releases.
