Closterkeller
Closterkeller is a Polish band from Warsaw, founded on January 1, 1988 on the initiative of Przemysław Guryn, Jacek Skirucha, and Anja Orthodox. From the outset, the group operated at the intersection of gothic rock, new wave, cold wave, and heavier rock forms, and Apple Music even notes that the label “gothic” is too narrow to fully describe them. The band emerged from the Polish cold wave scene, but over time moved toward a heavier, more metallic and atmospheric sound while keeping its dark and immediately recognizable identity. Its line-up changed many times over the years, yet Anja Orthodox remained the only member of the original line-up to perform continuously under the Closterkeller name since...
Artist Trivia
- Closterkeller is regularly described as one of the pioneers of gothic and atmospheric rock in Poland, not just as an important band of its era.
- The group’s impact goes beyond its own catalogue, because later acts such as Delight, Moonlight, and Artrosis have been cited as bands influenced by Closterkeller.
- Anja Orthodox is the only member of the original line-up who has remained continuously active in the band since 1988, which is a rare level of continuity in Polish alternative music.
- Apple Music points out that the label “gothic” is too narrow for Closterkeller, which fits a band that has long resisted simple genre boxes.
