Robert Matera

Robert Matera, often credited as Robert “Robal” Matera, is a Polish guitarist, composer, and singer best known for Dezerter, one of the most important bands in the history of Polish punk and hardcore punk. His standing comes not only from the length of his career, but from the fact that he co-created a group that built its identity on fast, abrasive music and lyrics with a clear social and political edge. Dezerter was formed in Warsaw in 1981, originally under the name SS-20, and Matera was one of its co-founders, shaping the band from the start as guitarist and musical architect. His role expanded further in 1986, when after the departure of Dariusz “Skandal” Hajn he also became the band’s main vocalist...

Artist Trivia

  • Dezerter originally started as SS-20, and the name change was linked to pressure from the communist authorities, which shows how politically charged the band’s context was from the very beginning.
  • After Dariusz “Skandal” Hajn left, Matera did not just help keep the band going, he also took over as main vocalist, which significantly increased his artistic responsibility.
  • According to Filmweb, the band he co-founded became the first punk act to release a record in communist Poland, referring to the 1983 single “Ku przyszłości.”
  • From 1994 to 1998 he played bass in Atomico Patibulo, a much deeper underground project than his main work with Dezerter.
