Brathanki
Brathanki is a Polish band founded in Kraków in 1998, known for building a distinctive space between folk, pop and rock by combining catchy songwriting with clear roots in Central European folk traditions. The group was initiated by Janusz Mus, who invited musicians with experience alongside major Polish artists, and from the start the project relied not only on vocals but also on accordion, violin and flute as defining elements of its sound. The band’s first concerts took place with Hanna Chowaniec-Rybka as vocalist, but it was after Halina Mlynkova joined that Brathanki entered the phase that brought nationwide recognition. - Before Halina Mlynkova became the group’s best-known voice, Brathanki’s first singer was Hanna Chowaniec-Rybka, who performed with the band at its earliest concerts.
- The debut album Ano! sold around 300,000 copies and earned multi-platinum status, placing it among the biggest commercial successes of the Polish music scene in the early 2000s.
- Much of the Ano! repertoire was based on folk material with lyrics by Zbigniew Książek, showing that Brathanki’s success was not just folk styling but a genuine creative reworking of tradition.
- After Halina Mlynkova left, the band did not stop, it experimented with different vocalists before settling into the more stable later era fronted by Agnieszka Dyk.
