Reggae

Izrael was one of the most important bands in the history of Polish reggae, founded in Warsaw in early 1983 by Robert Brylewski and Paweł “Kelner” Rozwadowski. Both musicians were already central figures in the Warsaw alternative scene, but until then they had been associated more with punk and new wave than with reggae. The band’s first public performance took place on February 27, 1983 at the Ubab club in Warsaw and was later documented on the archival release “Geneza.” That early appearance matters historically because it shows how quickly Izrael moved from concept to actual live activity. Izrael was not the first Polish band to play reggae, but Brylewski and his collaborators were the group that most effectively popularized the genre within Poland’s independent music culture.
The band was founded by musicians previously associated mainly with punk and new wave, Robert Brylewski from Brygada Kryzys and Paweł “Kelner” Rozwadowski from Deuter, which gave Izrael a cross-scene identity from the very start.
Izrael’s first public performance from February 27, 1983 was rediscovered years later and released as the archival set “Geneza,” which makes its early history unusually well documented for a Polish underground band.
Paweł “Kelner” Rozwadowski left relatively early, and Dariusz “Maleo” Malejonek took his place, later becoming one of the key figures in the band’s continuing story.
