The current Jarocin Festiwal operates under a name with major historical weight, with its defining turning point coming in 1980, when Walter Chełstowski launched the All-Polish Review of Young Generation Music in Jarocin, later associated with the Festival of Rock Musicians. At the same time, Jarocin’s festival roots go even deeper, back to the Wielkopolskie Rytmy Młodych events held there from 1971 onward. In the 1980s, Jarocin became one of Europe’s most important rock festivals and the leading alternative music festival in the Warsaw Pact countries. It was widely seen as a rare space of relative freedom for young people in late communist Poland, and today its legacy is described in cultural and social terms as much as musical ones.
